What are Chakras?

Chakras are energy centres in the body that play a crucial role in our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. The word "chakra" comes from the Sanskrit term meaning "wheel" or "disk," symbolizing the way these energy centres spin and flow. According to ancient spiritual traditions, particularly those rooted in Hinduism and Buddhism, there are seven primary chakras aligned along the spine, each corresponding to different aspects of our life, health, and consciousness. Just as your body has a circulatory system for blood, the chakra system is said to manage the flow of life force energy, often referred to as prana or chi.

Apart from the Root chakra (extends down towards the ground) and Crown chakra (extends up towards the sky), the chakras extend to the front and back of the body.

The Seven Main Chakras are:

1. Root (Base) Chakra (Muladhara):
Located at the base of the spine, represented by the colour red, and the element is Earth. It helps in the grounding process, aids stability, and survival. A balanced root chakra helps you feel secure and stable, while imbalances can manifest as anxiety or a lack of focus.

2. Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana):
Located in the lower abdomen, about 2 finger widths below the navel, represented by the colour orange, and the element is water. It governs creativity, sexuality, and emotions. A balanced sacral chakra enhances creativity, pleasure, and emotional expression, while blockages can lead to emotional instability or creative blocks.

3. Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura):
Located in the upper abdomen, near the stomach, between the rib cage and navel, represented by the colour yellow and the element is fire. It is associated with personal power, confidence, and self-esteem. When balanced, it supports self-confidence and motivation. Imbalances can cause low self-worth or digestive issues.

4. Heart Chakra (Anahata):
Located in the Centre of the chest and is represented by the colour green and the element is air. It is associated with love, compassion, and relationships. A healthy heart chakra enables deep emotional connections, empathy, and self-love. Blockages can result in feelings of loneliness or bitterness.

5. Throat Chakra (Vishuddha):
Located in the throat and is represented by the colour blue and the element is ether and space. It governs communication, self-expression, and truth. When balanced, it allows clear communication and self-expression. Imbalances might lead to difficulties in expressing thoughts or being misunderstood.

6. Third Eye Chakra (Ajna):
Located in forehead, between the eyebrows and is represented by the colour indigo or purple and the element is light. It is associated with intuition, insight, and spiritual awareness. A balanced third eye chakra sharpens intuition and enhances clarity of thought, while blockages can cause confusion or a lack of direction.

7. Crown Chakra (Sahasrara):
Located at the top of the head and is represented by the colour violet or white and the element is cosmic energy. It represents spiritual connection, enlightenment, and consciousness. When balanced, it fosters a sense of connection to the universe and inner wisdom. Imbalances may result in a sense of isolation or spiritual disconnection.

It is thought that each chakra corresponds to specific organs, emotions, and life areas. When energy flows freely through these chakras, it promotes physical health, emotional balance, and spiritual growth. However, when these energy centres become blocked or overactive, it can lead to issues such as, fatigue, pain, or illness  anxiety, anger, or depression, feeling stuck, disconnected, or lacking purpose

By keeping these energy centres aligned and balanced, you can improve your overall sense of well-being, increase vitality, and nurture inner peace.

Later blogs will advise which crystals can be used to help balance the seven main chakras.
